Around Town: Baron’s Ball names chairwoman

Huntington Beach resident Margo Ferris has been named chairwoman for the annual OC Baron’s Ball benefiting the American Cancer Society, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary.

Several Huntington Beach residents have been named event committee chairs: Jeanie Gibson, invitations and membership; Karyn Sanderson, entertainment; Mark Bullock, décor; Jackie Wirta, catering; and Armida Camacho, treasury.

The OC Baron’s Ball attracts guests who don western attire for an evening of gourmet dining, dancing to Danny Memphis and the Extraordinaires, playing midway games, shopping in the general store, enjoying entertainment and participating in live and silent auctions.

The ball will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Sept. 28 at The Dunes, 1131 Back Bay Drive, Newport Beach. Tickets start at $200 and can be purchased at https://www.ocbarons.org or by calling (949) 261-9446, option 3. Table sponsorships are available.

Three cheers for high school

Marina High School senior Brianna Adams will sign with Davenport University in Michigan for a partial, four-year cheerleading scholarship.

Adams has been a varsity cheerleader for four years and has participated in a competitive regional All-Star, Level 5 cheer program, which is the highest level of competition for high school students.

For the past three years, she attended the UCA High School Nationals Competition in Florida with the Marina team, and last year she attended the USAF Cheerleading Worlds in Florida with her All-Star team. For the past two years, Marina’s cheer team has placed seventh in the National High School Cheerleading Championship in Orlando, Fla., in the medium varsity advanced division.

Brianna attributed her good fortune to her involvement in the college-readiness system AVID and her participation in Marina’s cheer program.

“If you’re involved in school, you find a better path and better direction to get where you want to be,” Brianna said in a news release.

This opportunity is particularly important for Brianna, since she could become the first in her immediate family to earn a four-year degree. She was offered the scholarship in her junior year.

Trained for the military

Air Force Airman Austin D. Walder graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward a degree offered by the Community College of the Air Force.

Walder, a 2009 graduate of Huntington Beach High School, is the son of Joyce Walder of Westminster.

Army Cadet Daniel J. Tierney graduated from the Army ROTC (Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) Leader’s Training Course at Fort Knox, Ky.

Tierney, a 2009 graduate of Fountain Valley High School, is the son of Michael and Mary Tierney of Huntington Beach.

During training he learned traditional leadership values to improve self-confidence, decision making and team cohesion.

His education included rifle marksmanship, weapons training, combat water survival and rappelling.

The course makes Tierney eligible to receive two-year college scholarship offers and to attend the advanced ROTC course.
