All that scholastic stress paying off

Chloe J. Lippold of Huntington Beach has been named a President’s Scholar with the 2013 incoming freshman class at Cal State Long Beach. She will receive a full, four-year scholarship from the university worth about $70,000.

Lippold graduated with the Marina High School class of 2013 and, fortunately for her, took her high school career seriously. Because of her efforts she qualified for the President’s Scholar as a National Hispanic Scholar through the National Hispanic Recognition Program. Each year, the program honors about 5,000 of the highest-scoring students from more than 250,000 Latino juniors who take the PSAT/NMSQT.

Mariners’ members give big

Members of Mariners Church were given a challenge to raise a lot of money for worth community groups and met the highest of expectations.

Worshipers in churches in Huntington Beach, Irvine, Mission Viejo and San Juan Capistrano raised more than $829,000 in April and May as part of “Be Fearless,” a short-term community service. The money raised will support specific programs identified by 50 nonprofit groups, most based in Orange County, according to a news release.

In April the 10,000-plus worshipers at the churches were challenged to fearlessly help meet growing hunger, poverty and other social needs throughout Southern California. Church leaders established aggressive 30-day goals for attendees to donate $500,000 above and beyond their usual level of giving, contribute 50 tons of food, and volunteer 15,000 hours of community service, according to the release.

Laurie Beshore, lead pastor of Mariners Outreach Ministries, said in the release that “what is most meaningful, and offers the greatest hope for the future, is the fact that more than 5,000 people got involved in some way — either by donating money, resources or their time in the form of volunteer service. This is God’s people responding to human needs to create lasting change.”

One of the recipients of the fundraising was Colette’s Children’s Home in Huntington Beach. The facility is for homeless single women, mothers and children and will use the money to make needed renovations and repairs, according to the release.
