The Surf City USA Marathon attracted 21,000 runners to Huntington Beach on Sunday.
These athletes — who had come from 33 countries and 50 states to enjoy Southern Calfornia — were welcomed to the streets by 2,300 volunteers and more than 100 coordinators from all over Orange County.
On behalf of the management of the race, I'd like to personally thank the volunteers and coordinators who made this experience so memorable for our the participants.
The largest contingencies of volunteers came from the fantastic local Key Clubs of Westminster, La Quinta, Bolsa Grande, Marina, Fountain Valley, Segerstrom and Pacifica high schools.
Additional volunteers helped out from the Wilson High girls gymnastics' team, Bolsa Grande High men's league and Bolsa Grande High ASB, Westminster High CSF, Lion's Heart, Mesa View Middle School, Sowers Middle School, Pacific Life Good Guys, Garden Grove High Key Club, Kiwanis Club of Huntington Beach, Oceanview High Key Club, Edison High Key Club, Villa Park Key Club, Garden Grove National Honors Society, Mater Dei Key Club, Santiago Key Club, Marina High School Red Cross, Irvine High National Honors Society, UCI Alpha Phi Omega, Cal State Long Beach interns and Godinez Key Club.
Common Core will ruin our children
If the central planners and progressive bureaucrats get their way, teaching the Constitution to U.S. schoolchildren will be a thing of the past.
Common Core is unacceptable. This top-down, bureaucratic takeover of local schools must be stopped.
Common Core will dumb-down education, collect data on kids and their families and leave American youngsters behind in the global economy.
Since Washington politicians started running our schools, costs have exploded for taxpayers and student test scores have decreased.
It is time to make education the top priority, but not by the federal bureaucracy. History and documents that founded this country have to be taught. We need to stay strong on this.
Computer science and other related course are important, but history must be just as important, because without knowledge of the past, the schoolchildren will not be equipped to avoid past mistakes — such as the events that led to World War II and the current world threat of terrorism.
We must not let them be led down such a narrow path.
