Mailbag: Classrooms, not offices, need district’s help

Share

The Huntington Beach City School District wants to sell part of its property to a home developer that would “help pay for a new headquarters” (“School site up for discussion,” July 19). The district is currently using the LeBard site as its headquarters.

What is wrong with this picture?

With school funding drastically being cut, teachers laid off and classroom sizes increasing, the district wants to spend money on a new, shiny headquarters for its bureaucrats instead of spending the money on educating the children.

They already have a headquarters. The district should use what it already has and is most likely completely paid for. If the district has a surplus of money, it should be spent on the district’s primary mission — educating the children.

Health reform is in great shape

What part of ObamaCare don’t the people like who are opposed to it?

Among the changes that are now implemented are:

1. Our young adult children can stay on their folks’ healthcare plans until they are 26. Who doesn’t appreciate that one?

2. The insurance companies can’t refuse to insure you even if you have a preexisting condition. Who doesn’t appreciate that except the insurance companies? The rest of the health insurance coverage doesn’t take effect until 2014.

Our present health insurance is unsustainable. I’m 96 and have Anthem Blue Cross, and my insurance costs me $7,000 a year and I’m a widow.

Let’s get real, folks, and smell the coffee. ObamaCare is going to be great for all Americans.

Challenges for Muslim columnist

Regarding “A play on perceptions” (Unveiled: A Muslim Girl in O.C., June 21):

One would truly be impressed with a Muslim girl if she were to attend services in

a) a synagogue

b) a mosque belonging to another sect (and fold her hands in prayer in their fashion, not hers)

c) a meeting house of the Religious Society of Friends.
