Around Town: Family campus at Golden West closer to reality

This year’s sixth annual Surf City Splash raised $100,000 for several charities, according to a news release from the Surf City Rotary Club of Huntington Beach.

More than 230 guests attented the event at the Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort, enjoying dinner, dancing and auctions.

Half of the money raised will go to the Boys & Girls Club of Huntington Valley’s Building Dreams campaign to build a “family campus” at Golden West College. The family campus would include a new preschool, gymnasium and Boys & Girls Club for school-age children.

The other half of the proceeds will fund the Rotary Club’s projects, including providing food for the homeless in Huntington Beach and polio inoculation and relief programs around the world.

The event has raised more than $200,000 for the Building Dreams campaign over the past six years.

With the family campus’ preschool now complete and operating, the Boys & Girls Club is focusing on phases two and three of the campaign: the gymnasium and club.

Rotary Club member Resa Evans has been instrumental in kick-starting the second phase of the campaign with a significant contribution from her family’s Boand Family Foundation. The new gym will be named in her parents’ honor: The Harry and Jaynne Boand Gymnasium.

The gym will include basketball and volleyball courts and be used by the Boys & Girls Club and Golden West College, giving community members of all ages a new place to get fit and have fun. Evans is also a major supporter of Surf City Splash, contributing $15,000 to help underwrite the event.

Local graduates from Air Force base

Air Force airman Brittany A. White graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

White’s training included military discipline, Air Force core values and basic warfare principles and skills.

White is a 2012 graduate of Marina High School in Huntington Beach. She is the daughter of Jennifer Brown of Westminster and Larry White of Valencia.

Gathering for Alzheimer’s center

Alzheimer’s Family Services Center is celebrating its 13th anniversary with “A Gathering of Friends” galaMay 11 at the Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort in Huntington Beach.

The evening, dubbed “Dancing through the Decades,” will include dinner and dancing.

Jane Sparks will be honored as the 2013 Participant Honoree. She has been attending the center since 2011 and “adds a radiant spirit to the AFSC family.” Sparks is a Newport Beach resident and mother of three sons, Tom, Jim and Gerald Jr. She also has three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
