Fountain Valley High to host career day

Share

Fountain Valley High School will host its first College and Career Day on Oct. 16, during which seniors will attend an informational forum while the other grades take assessment tests.

Freshman will be taking the ACT Explore test and sophomores the ACT Plan test, both of which explore post-high school options. Juniors will take the PSAT, a preparatory exam for the SAT and the qualifying test for National Merit Scholarships.

“With this testing day, it is our goal to promote college and career readiness across all grade levels,” the high school’s college and career specialist, Michaela Wakeman, said in a news release. “We want to ensure that all students are prepared for their post-high school choices.”

Seniors will be given the chance to participate in a College and Career Forum, which will feature more than 40 participants from colleges, businesses and training centers, Wakeman said.

Representatives from local community colleges, Cal State Long Beach, Cal State Fullerton, and the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, among others, will be available in the high school gym to talk with seniors.

A wide range of technical and career representatives will also be on hand.

Representatives from Best Buy, Target, Old Nay and the Waterfront Hilton will be handing out applications and talking with students who are looking for jobs during the holiday season.

Guest speakers at the event will include Gregory Washington, the dean of the Henry Samueli School of Engineering at UC Irvine, and a representative from Road Trip Nation, a Costa Mesa-based nonprofit that helps students find careers.
