Surf is still up in H.B.

Huntington Beach has one more surf event to get in before the last rays of summer have left the shore. The third annual Surf City Days is set for Sept. 14 and 15 at the pier and downtown area.

Like the recent U.S. Open of Surfing, the event will include surfing contests, surf- and skateboard-related activities and live music. But Surf City Days is bound to engender a stronger sense of community, said Susan Welfringer, manager of the Huntington Beach Business Improvement District, which puts on the event.

“It’s a whole representation of what the downtown area and Huntington Beach is,” she said.

For example, the Huntington Beach Surfing Contest, now in its 43rd year, is open only to residents within the boundaries of the Huntington Beach Union High School District, and now it’s part of Surf City Days, recreation supervisor John Valinsky said.

“The U.S. Open ... brings in people from all over,” he said. “This [Surf City Days] is really only publicized to the people around here. So it goes along with our locals-only contest.”

Valinsky said winners of the competition will get a medal but that most contestants look forward to the Huntington Surf & Sport goody bag, which usually includes surfboard leashes, T-shirts and other surf equipment.

The surf shop will offer surfboard demonstrations, and The Originalites will provide live music.

Coinciding with the surf event is the sixth annual Green Forum and Expo, hosted by the Chamber of Commerce, to encourage discussions about how where residents and local businesses discuss ways to live a more become more sustainable life.

The “forum” portion of the event will take place from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 14 at the Shorebreak HotelIt will feature keynote speaker and actor Ed Begley Jr., an actor and environmentalist.
