A man accused of trying to kill his roommate in a Fountain Valley hospital pleaded not guilty to murder charges Monday.

Orange County prosecutors say Ibrahim Yousef Battat, 36, used his hands to cover the nose and mouth of a 91-year-old man sharing his room at Fountain Valley Regional Medical Center on June 4.

Battat, a Laguna Niguel resident, is accused of beating the elderly man until a nurse and another patient stopped him.

The victim suffered a broken finger, major cuts to his head and a swollen eye, the Orange County district attorney's office said at the time.

Battat denied the charges this week, pleading not guilty to attempted murder, elder abuse and three sentencing enhancements, according to court records.

The charges could carry a sentence of 10 years to life in state prison.

Battat is being held in Orange County Jail in lieu of $1 million bail.

His attorney did not return a message Thursday.
