Transport mishap closes part of Brookhurst

A truck holding 23 tons of biosolids became stranded and caused a street closure Monday outside the Orange County Sanitation District facility in Huntington Beach, according to a spokesperson.

The trailer holding the material — described as a non-toxic nutrient-rich matter that is retrieved in waste water treatment used as fertilizer for non-food crops — disconnected from the cab as the driver pulled out of the facility near the intersection of Brookhurst Street and Bushard Street around 11:30 a.m., said district spokeswoman Jennifer Cabral.

None of the biosolids spilled onto the street, but Cabral said a crew was removing the trailer because they could not tow the truck out of the sidewalk area, Cabral said.

“There’s no risk to the public at all. Everything is contained,” she said. “The only impact to the public is the traffic on Brookhurst.”

The northbound lanes of Brookhurst at Bushard were closed for several hours to remove the trailer, pull the truck out and place the trailer back onto the vehicle.
