Ocean View objects to Pedigo project

Attorneys acting on behalf of the Ocean View School District in Huntington Beach have appealed a proposed 510-unit apartment complex out of concern for how it would affect its schools.

Planning commissioners Tuesday reviewed the Pedigo Apartments project, which is proposed for the southwest corner of Edinger Avenue and Gothard Street.

Associate Planner Jill Arabe briefed commissioners on the project and noted an appeal made by the district’s attorneys Monday.

Connor, Fletcher & Williams LLP sent Arabe a letter stating several concerns about the development, mainly that it would generate additional students that the school district cannot accommodate.

“Because of the veritable onslaught of residential units that have been, or are slated to be, approved under the [Beach and Edinger Corridor Specific Plan], the school district has been compelled to undertake a new demographics study,” wrote Edmond Connor, the managing partner with the law firm. “The results of which may well necessitate numerous boundary adjustments throughout the neighborhoods served by the school district.”

Arabe said the Planning Commission will address Ocean View’s concerns at its July 9 meeting, when the topic is slated for a public hearing.

Historic Wintersburg

In other news Tuesday, Huntington Beach planning commissioners voted to continue to Aug. 13 the discussion about the fate of the historic Wintersburg site.

The 6-0 vote, with Vice Chair Erik Peterson absent, gives Rainbow Environmental Services additional time to review the environmental report.

The last time commissioners discussed whether to remove or keep the historical buildings from the property, at Warner Avenue and Nichols Lane, was at the April 23 meeting.

Since then, Rainbow has asked the Planning Commission to push the item to a later date.
