New hotel on PCH gets underway

Construction on Huntington Beach’s newest beachside hotel is underway.

Officials broke ground June 4 at the Pacific City site of the eight-story Paséa Hotel and Spa.

The 250-room hotel will be built by developer R.D. Olson and managed by Pacific Hospitality Group, both based in Irvine.

The groups say they are looking to open the doors to the public by spring 2016.

Each of the hotel’s rooms will have a view of the ocean, said Kory Kramer, chief investment officer for Pacific Hospitality Group. Paséa will also feature a Balinese-inspired spa, a rooftop deck and 10 meeting rooms.

“We’ve done some light grading already, but our final grading should finish up by the end of the month,” said Robert Olson, founder and president of the development firm. “Soon we’ll be digging our foundation and getting the ball rolling.”

R.D. Olsen has built the Renaissance Club Sport Hotel in Aliso Viejo, the Legoland Hotel in Carlsbad and the Hyatt The Pike (formerly the Avia Hotel) in Long Beach.

Pacific Hospitality Group manages the Meritage Collection, which includes the Balboa Bay Resort in Newport Beach, the Meritage Resort and Spa in Napa, the Bacara Resort and Spa in Santa Barbara and the Estancia La Jolla Hotel and Spa in La Jolla.

“It’s going to be a fantastic project, and it’s going to fit nicely within our Meritage Collection portfolio of hotels,” Kramer said.

Paséa represents a combination of the words “Pacific” and “sea,” and in Spanish, paséa means to stroll, “which fits in nicely with the context of the beach, the boardwalk and the retail development, which is a part of the larger project there,” Kramer said.

The hotel is a third of the Pacific City project. Also planned is an outdoor shopping center, being built by developer DJM Development Partners, which also built the Bella Terra mall in Huntington Beach, and a 516-unit apartment complex set to be built by UDR. Plans for the housing units have yet to be released.

Pacific City is between First and Huntington streets on Pacific Coast Highway.
