Around Town: Volunteer honored for generosity with time

Share

The Alzheimer’s Family Services Center board member and volunteer Mary Lou Shattuck has been honored with the Orange County Community Foundation’s Philanthropy Award.

Along with the recognition, Shattuck received a $500 grant for the nonprofit organization of her choice, in this case AFSC.

One of the reasons Shattuck was chosen is that she isn’t stingy with her time. Along with working with AFSC since 2004, she is also on the board of directors for SPIN (serving people in need), and works with the Huntington Beach Art Center Foundation, Olive Crest, Waggin’ Trails Rescue Foundation and ARCS Foundation, an organization that provides scholarships for university students.

For information about AFSC, call (714) 593-9630 or visit https://www.AFSCenter.org.

The Orange County Community Foundation focuses on strengthening area nonprofits. For information on the foundation, call (949) 553-4202 or visit https://www.oc-cf.org.

Shoebox of caring

Grab a shoebox and surprise a kid.

Operation Christmas Child has a processing center here in Huntington Beach and is looking for gifts for needy children.

You can pack a shoebox with a gift or you can virtually pack a box online at https://www.samaritanspurse.org/occ.

You can choose a child’s age and gender, shop through a selection of online gifts, virtually pack them in a shoebox and then write a note of encouragement.

Donators can “follow” the box to its destination country, where it will be hand-delivered, according to the group’s press release.

Information: (714) 432-7030 or https://www.samaritanspurse.org/occ.

The Samaritan’s Purse project expects to reach a milestone by collecting and delivering shoeboxes to more than 100 million children since 1993.

The processing center is at 15342 Graham St. in Huntington Beach. Its hours are 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday through Tuesday.
