A Long Beach Fire Department captain was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty to severely injuring a cyclist while driving intoxicated with a blood alcohol level three times the legal limit.

John David Hines, 39, of Huntington Beach must serve five years of formal probation and one year in jail, according to a release from the Orange County district attorney’s office. He was also ordered to pay $102,000 in restitution to the victim.

D.A. spokeswoman Farrah Emami said if Hines violates his probation at any time, he must serve four years and four months in state prison.

Hines became intoxicated at about 1:20 p.m. April 1 at the Schooner or Later restaurant and bar in Long Beach, then drove erratically on Westminster Avenue in Seal Beach, lost control and crashed into a 47-year-old bicyclist.

He pleaded guilty in September.

Emami said she did not know if Hines was still employed by the Long Beach Fire Department. A department spokesman there could not be reached by press time.
