The Ocean View School District has named William Loose as its next superintendent, as Alan Rasmussen plans to retire in June.

Loose, an educator for more than 30 years, has been Ocean View’s assistant superintendent of administrative services since January 2008. He also teaches as an adjunct professor for Azusa Pacific University in the educational leadership credential program.

“I am so excited to be working in Huntington Beach,” Loose said in a statement. “I student taught at Edison High School in 1974 and I always wanted to be back where I started from. Ocean View is a fabulous district and it is a career highlight to be superintendent in this district that has a progressive and successful team that is committed to the academic achievement of all students.

“Despite the current economic challenges that we have, the overall morale and spirit is high for employees and parents, and it is my goal to continue to move the district forward to even greater achievements.”

Rasmussen has served as Ocean View’s superintendent since January 2008, when he succeeded interim Supt. Ed Sussman after working with him as a consultant for a year. The district hadn’t had a permanent head since December 2006, when Supt. Karen Colby retired after being placed on administrative leave. The district’s Academic Performance Index, a state system of measuring students’ progress on standardized tests, has climbed every year since Rasmussen took over, from 845 out of a possible 1,000 in 2008 to 847 in 2009 and 857 this year.

The Ocean View district services about 10,000 students in kindergarten through eighth grade, with two preschools, 12 elementary schools and four middle schools. The district is headquartered in Huntington Beach and also has campuses in Fountain Valley, Westminster and Midway City.
