Huntington Beach police arrested a Santa Ana man last week after a chase that ended with an armed struggle with an officer, according to a release from the department.

The officer stopped Frank Lauder Woods, 34, about 1:18 a.m. Oct. 19 in the area of Center Drive and Huntington Village Lane. Woods was driving a blue 1988 Toyota Camry that, according to a routine check, had been stolen from Midway City.

Woods pulled into a driveway and fled on foot, then attempted to tackle the officer when he gave chase, according to the release. The officer caught Woods, who reached into his waistband during the struggle.

A loaded semi-automatic handgun was found in Woods’ waistband after the officer subdued and handcuffed him, according to the release. He was also found to be in possession of narcotics that were presumed to be methamphetamine and heroin, and a search of the vehicle turned up a ski mask and a pair of bolt cutters.

Woods was booked at the Huntington city jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, possession of controlled substances, carrying a loaded and concealed weapon, possession of a firearm while committing a felony, resisting a police officer and vehicle theft. His bail was set at $100,000.
