Golden West to offer new business certificate

Golden West College is getting ready to offer a new small-business certificate program that would incorporate social media and the effect it has on business success.

The Entrepreneurship/Small Business Ownership Certificate will consist of seven required and five elective courses, said Jeff Haig, a business instructor at Golden West who also owns two businesses.

Haig said there’s a demand for these types of certificates. The program will be offered in the spring semester, which starts in January.

“There are a lot of people who own businesses in Huntington Beach and in the surrounding area,” Haig said. “Our goal is to give them the tools, skills and education necessary to be more successful in starting and running their own business. More people have a dream of one day having their own business, too.”

Among the courses is an encouraged elective on social media. The course might become a requirement as the program is reevaluated after the first semester, Haig said.

Facebook and Twitter have become important parts of many businesses, and therefore should be used to their advantage, Haig said.

“It’s all about creating awareness and having new channels to marketing your products and services,” he said. “Many of the core audiences are going online now, so you have to be where your audience is.”

The program will also offer classes created to those looking to open a business. One of them, Launching New Ventures, will teach students how to develop an idea and then market it to customers.

“We’re really excited to finally bring this type of certificate and courses to Golden West and the community,” he said.
