One dead after five-car crash on Adams Avenue
A 96-year-old woman died Friday from injuries she sustained following a collision involving six people and five cars on Adams Avenue near Bushard Street, Huntington Beach police said.
Police responded to the accident about a mile from the Costa Mesa city limits at 11:38 a.m. and closed the westbound lanes on Adams between Derbyshire Lane and Bushard.
A blue 2005 Mercedes-Benz E500 stalled in the middle of the street due to some mechanical problems, Lt. Russell Reinhart said.
A white 2005 Toyota Corolla, silver 2004 Jaguar X-Type and a silver 2002 Mercedes-Benz C240 stopped behind the stalled Mercedes, however, a 2006 Mitsubishi Endeavor failed to stop and crashed into the rest, causing a chain reaction, Reinhart said.
The woman, whose name was not released pending notification to all family members, was riding in the Toyota with a family member, Reinhart said. She was transported to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where she died a short time later.
The other five people involved in the crash were transported to local hospitals for nonlife- threatening injuries, Reinhart said.
As of 4 p.m. Friday, three were still in the hospital.
