Edison files claim against city
Southern California Edison wants Huntington Beach to pay for damages caused to underground electrical facilities that were struck while city staff were working on a street.
City employees hit and damaged underground Edison electrical facilities April 14 on Magnolia Street, according to a claim filed Sept. 9.
The claim lists city Inspector John Griffin as the contact person.
Contractors, not city employees, were the ones working on a paving project on Magnolia at that time, said city Director of Public Works Travis Hopkins.
Griffin’s job is to inspect projects, but neither he nor any city employee performed construction, Hopkins said.
“We’re investigating the claim,” he said. “City employees didn’t do any work out there. We had a street repair project, so I suspect that’s what it was. I don’t know if the claim is legitimate.”
Edison filed an unlimited civil case against the city, which means the money the utility company is asking for is expected to exceed $10,000.
