The arraignment of a Huntington Beach man accused of punching a man who is now on life support has been continued to Aug. 5.

Oscar Raul Medina-Perez, 24, originally scheduled to be arraigned July 15, is charged with one felony count of battery with serious injury, according to the Orange County District Attorney. If convicted, Medina-Perez could face a maximum sentence of four years in state prison.

While at La Barca Night Club in Stanton on July 5, Medina-Perez is accused of getting into a verbal altercation with Leovardo Vera Bustos, 24, in front of the nightclub, prosecutors said. A security guard stood between the two men, but the argument escalated and Medina-Perez punched Bustos in the face, according to prosecutors.

Bustos, who was with his cousin at the nightclub, fell to the ground, losing consciousness, prosecutors said. He was taken home but never regained consciousness. The next morning, he was found in bed, unresponsive and bleeding from his nose. Bustos is now on life support at UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange, prosecutors said.

Medina-Perez’s bail was expected to be set at $25,000, but he would not be eligible to post it because he’s under hold by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, prosecutors said.
