The 10th member of the city’s adopted 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines was killed July 1 by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan, officials said.

Cpl. Larry D. Harris Jr., 24, of Thornton, Colo., was killed while on foot patrol in the Garmsir district of Helmand Province, Afghanistan, said officials with the Huntington Beach 3/1 Marines Foundation.

Harris was on his second combat deployment, serving in Iraq in 2007, and was decorated with a Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon and National Defense Service Medal.

The city adopted the “Thundering Third,” stationed in Camp Pendleton, in 2005. Harris is the 10th 3/1 Marine to be killed since the battalion was deployed in April.

The Marines are expected to be in Afghanistan through November. The battalion has been twice deployed to Iraq since its adoption.

The foundation is accepting condolence cards for Harris’ family or wife. Cards should be addressed to “The Family of Cpl. Larry Harris, Jr.,” or “The Spouse of Cpt. Larry Harris, Jr.”

Cards can be mailed to Huntington Beach 3/1 Marines Foundation, 19744 Beach Blvd., No. 528, Huntington Beach, CA 92648.
