Commission votes to officially name Triangle Park

Share

The Huntington Beach Community Services Commission voted unanimously May 11 to give a city park an official name.

Although it has long been known as Triangle Park, the city had to go through the process of naming it after the property, which surrounds the Main Street Library, was added into the list of city parks, said David Dominguez, facilities development and concessions manager for the city.

The name is expected to be finalized once the City Council votes to validate the community services commission’s recommendation, which is expected June 20, Dominguez said.

Community members, led by Gloria Alvarez of the Huntington Beach Downtown Residents Assn., became concerned about preserving the park when the city was in the process of preparing its Downtown Specific Plan Update.

Alvarez said the city named the park Triangle almost 100 years ago when it was reported in a local newspaper. The city also mentioned the park by its name in a staff report when it was awarding a contract for the construction of the library. But Dominguez said Huntington Beach had no records of the name, and that’s why the city had to go through the process.
