A family of three was displaced after a fire consumed the second floor of a two-story house in Huntington Beach on Monday morning, causing about $85,000 worth of damage, according to authorities.

A total of 40 firefighters from Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley, Orange and Orange County fire departments doused the blaze, according to a news release.

Firefighters arrived on scene at 12:50 a.m. and extinguished the fire in about 25 minutes, Huntington Beach Fire Department Battalion Chief Jeff Lopez said.

The fire started on the second floor in a room near the rear of the house, in the 900 block of Alabama Street, Lopez said. The flames engulfed the second story and threatened to spread to an adjoining house, he added.

The heat of the fire broke a window of the neighboring house and smoke started heading toward the home, but Lopez said firefighters were able to prevent the second house from catching on fire.

No one was in the second house during the time of the fire, Lopez said.

No injuries were reported. The American Red Cross is helping the family, according to the release.

The cause is still under investigation.
