A Midway City man pleaded not guilty Tuesday to aggravated assault charges for allegedly attacking a Huntington Beach police officer who responded to a fight in front of a hotel, according to the Orange County district attorney’s office.

Nam Viet Hong Vo is allegedly one of an unknown number of people who attacked the officer at 12:59 a.m. Saturday. His bail was set at $500,000, and he is scheduled for pretrial hearing on Friday, said district attorney spokeswoman Farrah Emami.

The officer, whose name was not being released, was the first to respond to a report of a fight at Hotel Huntington Beach, 7667 Center Ave., said Lt. Mitch O’Brien.

As the officer was assisting people who were injured in the fight, he was allegedly attacked by Vo and others.

“He became the victim really quickly over a really vicious assault,” O’Brien said.

Other officers responded shortly. Vo was arrested, but the rest of the suspects fled the scene.

The officer suffered moderate injuries, was transported to a local hospital and is now recovering at home, O’Brien said.

Police are still investigating the case and are asking anyone with information to contact Det. Pat Ellis at (714) 536-5971.
