A man will face trial Wednesday for allegedly shooting and killing his father in their Huntington Beach home two years ago.

Jeremy Martin, 37, is charged with one count of murder and, if convicted, faces 50 years to life in prison, according to a news release from the Orange County District Attorney.

Martin allegedly shot Frederick Martin, 62, after being visited by Huntington Beach police on the morning of May 20, 2011.

The two allegedly got into a verbal and physical argument that morning because Jeremy Martin was keeping a firearm inside their home.

Frederick Martin called police to have them evaluate the mental state of his son, according to the release, but he didn’t mention to police that they were in an argument about the firearm.

Police came to the house, but Jeremy Martin reportedly refused to talk with them.

After police left, Jeremy Martin allegedly shot his father once, and Frederick Martin died at the scene, district attorney spokeswoman Farrah Emami said.

According to the release, Jeremy Martin called 911 and reported that he shot his father.

The trial is expected to begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana.
