Ortega was charged with one felony count of attempted murder with premeditation and deliberation, one felony count of conspiracy to commit murder and one felony count of mayhem.

He was allegedly paid to kill Frank Sharpski by the victim’s wife, Mary Katheryn Sharpski, 50, of Fountain Valley, so she could continue a romantic relationship with another man.

Mary Sharpski was allegedly having an affair with Michael Calvin Shores II, 42, of Fountain Valley, according to the press release. According to the release, Frank and Mary Sharpski were married with three children at the time of the crime. Shores reportedly had been a tenant in the family’s home.

Mary Sharpski and Shores have been charged with one count of attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder mayhem and a sentencing enhancement for great bodily injury. They have pleaded not guilty.

If found guilty, the two will each face a maximum sentence of life in prison.

A pre-trial setting conference for the defendants is scheduled for April 12.
