H.B. man convicted of hit-and-run
A Huntington Beach man was convicted Thursday of a hit-and-run accident that left a bicyclist dead.
Adam Carl Garrett, 19, pleaded guilty to a court offer to one felony count of hit-and-run causing death and one misdemeanor count of vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence, according to the Orange County district attorney’s office.
He was sentenced to 180 days in jail, 200 hours of community service and three years of formal probation, and ordered to pay $14,000 in restitution to the victim’s family.
Garrett had previously pleaded not guilty in August.
Garrett crashed into 25-year-old Hung Khac Do about 3 a.m. May 15 along Warner Avenue in Fountain Valley. The impact threw Do off his bike, and Garrett fled the scene to his Huntington Beach home four miles away. He then called 911 around 3:20 a.m. to falsely report his involvement in the accident, according to prosecutors.
Do was spotted lying in the road by a limousine driver and transported by paramedics to UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange, where he died 40 minutes later. An autopsy determined the cause of death to be multiple blunt force trauma injuries.
