Around Town: Kids raise 65,149 pennies for drug prevention

Share

Students from 23 classes at Adams Elementary School in Costa Mesa raised $651.49 — in the form of 65,149 pennies — in a Pennies for Prevention drive to benefit Community Service Programs’ Project PATH, which fights problems associated with alcohol, tobacco and drug use through education, training and technical assistance.

Jordan Hua of Project PATH (Positive Action Toward Health) asked students at the school to share their natural highs (what makes them feel good without the use of substances), and several responded by expressing their interest in soccer, basketball and gymnastics.

Community Service Programs is a nonprofit agency in Orange County whose programs assist abused children, struggling families, crime victims, people in need of mediation services and more. For more information, visit www.cspinc.org.

A memorial service is set for Dec. 14 for an Irvine lawyer who was struck and killed by a car on Halloween night in an accident that seriously injured his 4-year-old son.

The celebration of life for John Roger Alcorn, 65, will begin at 1 p.m. at Strawberry Farms Golf Club, 11 Strawberry Farms Road, Irvine.

Also, a page on the CaringBridge website has been created to give Alcorn’s friends, relatives, clients and others a place to share their memories of him. The link is https://www.caringbridge.org/visit/johnalcorn.
