A Costa Mesa man was seriously hurt in a crash after he got out of his car that had stalled on the 405 Freeway in Fountain Valley early Monday, according to authorities.

The Audi A4 was stuck on the middle northbound lane at Talbert Avenue about 5 a.m. when the 29-year-old driver got out and walked to the front of the car, California Highway Patrol Officer Tom Joy said.

As the man was standing there, a 2002 Acura MDX rear-ended the Audi, pushing it into him, Joy said

Crews from the Costa Mesa Fire Department responded and took the man to a trauma center in Santa Ana, according to the CHP.

The Acura’s driver, a 29-year-old woman from Gardena, complained of pain but was not seriously hurt in the crash, Joy said.

Authorities said they are unsure why the Audi stalled or why the driver got out.
