Huntington Beach and Newport Beach residents can sign up for a free ride to the South Coast Air Quality Management District’s Diamond Bar headquarters for the agency’s hearing on beach fire rings Friday morning.

A bus is set to leave from Huntington Beach City Hall, 2000 Main St., about 7:30 a.m., according to an Eventbrite page, while another will leave from the old Newport Beach City Hall site, 3300 Newport Blvd., about 7:15 a.m.

Nicole Llido, Huntington Beach Marketing and Visitors Bureau Visitor services manager, said the bureau, working with the city of Huntington Beach, sponsored the buses.

“Our big thing is we’re trying to get as many people there as we can to show support for the rings,” she said Wednesday.

Lunch will be provided on the return trip for those who reserve ahead of time one of the about 50 seats on each bus. Riders can park at the respective sites for free.

To reserve a spot on the bus leaving from Newport, go to savethebonfiresnewport.eventbrite.com. For a spot on the bus leaving from Huntington, go to savethebonfires.eventbrite.com.

Llido said that as of Wednesday morning, about 20 seats had been reserved on the Huntington Beach bus, but she didn’t know about the one headed out of Newport.

AQMD board members are expected to vote on a compromise that would allow most fire rings to remain on Southern California beaches but create buffer zones, after an initial proposal for a blanket ban on the fires sparked an outcry among residents of the region.

The meeting starts at 9 a.m. at 21865 Copley Drive, Diamond Bar.
