Big surf forecast for Saturday

After weeks of small surf, the National Weather Service is forecasting big waves along the Orange County coast this weekend.

The weather service issued a high-surf advisory Friday, saying a large westerly swell will build through Saturday, resulting in surf of up to 10 feet at some local beaches.

With temperatures reaching 80 degrees in some areas, beaches are expected to be busy, lifeguards said.

Huntington Beach is expected to see surf of 6 to 8 feet Saturday, with occasional 10-foot waves. In Newport Beach, waves are expected to be 4 to 6 feet, according to Surfline.com, a surf forecasting website.

The swell also will bring strong rip currents, the weather service said. Lifeguards suggest that beachgoers avoid swimming near rocks and structures.

“We advise people to know their limitations and pick a place on the beach that aligns with their abilities,” said Newport Beach lifeguard Battalion Chief Mike Halphide.
