COSTA MESA — A man who was found stabbed just after 6 p.m. Tuesday near the Mesa Verde Country Club has died, police said.

The 40-year-old victim was discovered lying in the driveway of a home in the 3000 block of Capri Lane with stab wounds to his upper torso and chest, police said in a news release.

Costa Mesa police have arrested Jeffrey Alec Henderson, 50, of Costa Mesa, in connection to the crime. Henderson was found in Fountain Valley about five miles from the scene, after police stopped an SUV in which Henderson was a passenger.

Police believe Henderson and the victim may have had an altercation before the stabbing.

Henderson is being held on $100,000 bail in Orange County Jail.

The victim was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, where he died of his injuries. His name is being withheld, pending family notification.

Four people have been killed in Costa Mesa this year — the highest number since 2006, when there were six homicides, according to Unified Crime Reports from the Costa Mesa Police Department.

No homicides were reported in 2007.
