Search continues in Newport Harbor for missing kayaker

The search for a Huntington Beach kayaker believed to have gone missing in Newport Harbor continued early Friday evening, authorities said.

The man’s family reported him missing Thursday afternoon, said Sgt. John Hollenbeck of the Harbor Patrol.

Multiple boats and the Sheriff’s Department helicopter were being used in the search Friday, Hollenbeck said.

“There’s quite a few people looking for him,” Hollenbeck said.

KTLA 5 reported that the man was 53 years old. He was last seen in a forest green kayak.

The missing man would often kayak in and around Newport Harbor, and his car was found parked near an end street on the Balboa Peninsula, Hollenbeck told the Daily Pilot.

Hollenbeck said the man had told his family that he was going kayaking.

Searches are being conducted in and around the harbor and the Back Bay.
