LOS ANGELES — Three members of the staff who produce the Daily Pilot, Huntington Beach Independent and Coastline Pilot won Los Angeles Times Editorial Awards banquet Thursday night.

Times Community News (TCN) South employees Mona Shadia, Barry Faulkner and Joanna Clay received recognition at the annual internal competition that recognizes the best work produced by the Los Angeles Times as well as its community and Spanish-language divisions.

Shadia received the top prize for TCN South, the editor’s award for her series of columns on the Muslim-American experience in Orange County. Shadia, a news reporter for the Independent, writes the weekly “Unveiled: A Muslim Girl in O.C.” column, which aims to dispel stereotypes about Arab Americans and create understanding with other cultures.

Faulkner, the assistant sports editor of the Daily Pilot, was recognized in the sportswriting category for his 25 years of service to the newspaper. He is well-known to readers for his distinctive coverage of prep sports and UC Irvine athletics.

Clay, assistant web editor for TCN South and a news reporter at Coastline Pilot, received the newswriting award for her contributions to the newspaper group’s social media efforts. She recently revamped the newspapers’ use of Facebook and Twitter, dramatically increasing reader engagement.

“Whether it’s sports, news, digital or commentary, Barry, Joanna and Mona are great contributors to our newspapers in Orange County,” said John Canalis, editor of TCN South. “To see them honored by the editorial staff of the Los Angeles Times is an immense joy for all of us who work with them.”

The three received their awards from Randy Harvey, associate editor of the Los Angeles Times. Harvey oversees the TCN division on behalf of The Times.

Three staff members for the TCN North, staff in Los Angeles County, and three staffers from Hoy, The Times’ Spanish-language newspaper, were also honored at the event.

The banquet, which was held at The Times’ headquarters in downtown Los Angeles, recognized journalists in multiple categories, including investigative reporting, sportswriting, feature writing, blogging and headline writing.
