LOS ANGELES — Three Times Community News (TCN) South journalists won Los Angeles Times 2010 Editorial Awards on Tuesday in recognition of their contributions to the Daily Pilot and its sister newspapers.

Web Editor Jamie Rowe, who oversees the digital efforts of the Daily Pilot, Laguna Beach Coastline Pilot, Huntington Beach Independent and O.C. Now blog, won the Editor’s Award — the top recognition — for her efforts to improve the newspapers’ online presentation and traffic.

Page designer Kelly Parker, who designs each of those papers, won the Design Award for her work designing compelling front and inside pages. Parker was also recognized for her news judgment, supervision of the Sunday edition and taking on new initiatives, including editorial content added to the Saturday real estate section.

Daily Pilot Staff Writer Mike Reicher won the Beat Reporting Award for his coverage of Newport Beach City Hall and his assignments as the newspaper’s special projects reporter. Reicher recently won two statewide awards for investigative reporting and was praised for both his day-to-day beat coverage and long-form work.

The TCN awards were given by John Canalis, editor for TCN South, at a ceremony at the downtown newsroom of the Los Angeles Times, which owns the Daily Pilot and other TCN products.

“Jamie, Kelly and Mike produce fantastic journalism every day, and each one of them goes above and beyond their job descriptions,” Canalis said. “They put Orange County readers first — and it shows in their work.”

Canalis also honored the staff of TCN North, which publishes the Burbank Leader, Glendale News-Press and La Cañada Valley Sun.

At the ceremony, Los Angeles Times Editor Russ Stanton gave a number of awards to the journalists on his staff, including this year’s Pulitzer Prize winners for public service and photography.

Stanton called 2010 “an incredible year by any measure, an extraordinary one journalistically when we step back ... to honor the best work produced by one of the very best newsrooms on the planet,” according to a report in The Times.

A complete list of winners can be viewed on the L.A. Times website.
