Greer’s OC: Celebrate birthdays with cupcakes

There will be an anniversary party at 2 p.m. Tuesday on Main Beach in Laguna Beach to celebrate four of Laguna Beach’s milestone birthdays. The Laguna Playhouse is turning 90; Laguna College of Art & Design is 50; Pacific Marine Mammal Center is turning 40; and the Laguna Beach Visitors & Conference Bureau is 25.

Free cupcakes will be given to the first 750 guests, and there will be a four-layer cupcake cake, courtesy of Casey’s Cupcakes, the recent winner of Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars,” to celebrate the anniversaries. The bottom layer will have 90 cupcakes, the third layer 50, the second layer 40 and the top layer 25.

Guests also can register at the event to win a five-day/four-night trip for two to Menton, France, a sister city of Laguna Beach. Registration will continue in the Visitors Center through Nov. 3, when the winner will be drawn. The Visitors Center is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 381 Forest Ave.

‘Good Times’ with Chef Jamie

Join Chef Jamie Gwen for a cooking demonstration, food and wine sampling, and signing of her latest book, “Good Food for Good Times 2” from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Fleur de Lys in Costa Mesa.

Gwen will be cooking savory samples like a composed beet salad with dill crème fraiche; brown sugar and cracked pepper salmon bites; cast iron skillet stovetop mac n’cheese; and minted couscous with almonds and garlicky shrimp. Jewelry for Second Harvest

Stop by Blend @ the Cove in Newport Beach from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday for a Kora jewelry trunk show to benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank.

Kora is a recycled jewelry line handmade by local artisans in developing communities in Africa. The sustainable business works by paying fair prices, and in turn providing the artisans with the capital to build their businesses. South African Designs

Carrol Boyes, a premier South African sculptor and product designer, just opened her first West Coast store at Fashion Island.

Walk to End Alzheimer’s

You can Walk to End Alzheimer’s at Doheny State Beach in Dana Point on Saturday. Enjoy a fun-filled day at the beach with entertainment and prizes for the entire family and raise awareness and the necessary funds and for care, services and research. The Alzheimer’s Assn. doesn’t charge for the care and myriad services it provides to people and families affected by Alzheimer’s disease. The Walks to End Alzheimer’s are its main fundraising events.

Registration opens at 7:30 a.m., special guest emcee Tina Borgatta from OC Metro will host the opening ceremonies beginning at 9:30 a.m., and the walk starts at 10 a.m. A pancake breakfast will be served for a donation to the walk. Free parking is available at Marco Forster Middle School with shuttle service to the walk, or paid parking is available at the state beach parking lot for $15.

Register for the Doheny beach walk and raise $200 between now and Thursday for your chance to win an iPad.

Benefit for At-Risk Women

In honor of Mother’s Day, Studio Chameleon in Newport Beach is partnering with domestic violence shelter Human Options through May. It’s accepting gently used furniture donations that will go to women in crisis, and you’ll receive 25% off the purchase of furniture. Studio Chameleon will pick up your old piece at delivery of your new one! Furniture delivery is offered within a 15-mile radius.

After all donations are received, owner Eve Lowey will also work with women to help them decorate their apartment. These women will be getting furniture to help rebuild their lives, along with Eve’s expertise and 30 years of experience!
