Sunset Beach vote is Thursday night

The Sunset Beach Community Assn. is scheduled to vote Thursday night on whether to file an application with the Orange County Local Agency Formation Commission to incorporate as a city.

Representatives from Willdan Financial Services, a consulting firm hired by the association, declared last month that the 1,300-resident seaside community had the money to become its own city. However, they recommended that Sunset leave its beach under county jurisdiction, citing the high costs of lifeguards and other services.

The county commission put Sunset under Huntington Beach’s sphere of influence in July, but Huntington has not yet moved to annex the area. In the meantime, many Sunset residents are pushing for cityhood, which would require approval from the county as well as a majority of voters.

The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Sunset Beach Women’s Club, 16812 Bayview Drive.
