Tran wins, Harman doesn’t

Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley’s representatives had a mixed showing in Tuesday’s primaries, with one winning easily and two others having varied success in seeking higher office.

Meanwhile, Costa Mesa Mayor Allan Mansoor appeared poised to run in November for the seat soon to be vacated by Assemblyman Van Tran, whose district includes Fountain Valley.

Even though all precincts had reported by Wednesday morning, a spokesman for the Orange County Registrar of Voters said the results were still unofficial and could take up to 28 days to certify.

Mansoor beat Long Pham for the Republican nomination for Tran’s 68th District Assembly seat. If the results are finalized, Mansoor will likely face Democratic challenger Phu Nguyen, a businessman who defeated federal court translator Joe Dovinh on Tuesday night. Tran and Mansoor are both termed out after this year and are seeking higher political office. Tran overcame two challengers with 50% of the vote in the Republican primary for the 47th Congressional District.

Assemblyman Jim Silva, whose 67th District covers Huntington Beach, ran unopposed for the Republican nomination for his district and is set to face Democrat Rosalind Freeman in November.

State Sen. Tom Harman, whose district covers Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley, fell short in his bid to become the Republican nominee for state attorney general, trailing Los Angeles Dist. Atty. Steve Cooley and attorney John Eastman.
