Costa Mesa Councilwoman Wendy Leece announced this week that she is running for a seat on the Orange County Water District Board of Directors.

The termed-out councilwoman is running for the 7th District seat, now held by board President Shawn Dewane, who is seeking reelection.

The 7th District covers Costa Mesa and portions of Fountain Valley, Irvine and Newport Beach.

Dewane, first elected to the 10-member board in 2010, also serves on the Mesa Water District.

Leece, a longtime Westside resident, said in a news release that she is “very serious about our responsibility to be wise stewards of our precious water resources during the current drought and in the future.”

“I am a thoughtful, prudent decision-maker. I do my homework. I come to meetings prepared.”

She said she would promote transparency, operational efficiency, new technology and sound fiscal policies.

Leece, 65, was first elected to Costa Mesa’s council in 2006. She also served on the city’s Parks and Recreation Commission and, from 1994 to 2002, on the Newport-Mesa Unified School District Board of Education.

Earlier this year, Leece unsuccessfully ran for the 48th Congressional District, long held by U.S. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Costa Mesa). In the June primary, she came in third in a field of five candidates, with about 11,000 votes.
