The Palisades Tennis Club, 1171 Jamboree Road, in Newport Beach will host a tournament Sunday in memory of a Navy SEAL killed in the downing of a U.S. military helicopter in Afghanistan.

The public is welcome to watch the tournament from noon to 3 p.m. in memory of Stephen Matthew “Matt” Mills, 35, whose mother-in-law is a club member.

Mills was one of 30 American service members and eight Afghans killed when Taliban forces shot down their helicopter during a mission Aug. 6, according to news reports. Twenty-two of those killed, including Mills, were members of the Navy’s elite SEAL Team 6.

Proceeds from the benefit event will go to his widow and baby boy, tournament organizers said. People are encouraged to come to the club at 11 a.m., as well as bring American flags or dress in patriotic colors. The tournament will start at noon with an honor guard from Newport’s American Legion Post 291 holding a ceremony to honor Mills.
