Susan Lee Spoeneman

Susan Lee Spoeneman, a teacher and administrator in the Ocean View and Huntington Beach Union High School Districts, passed away on October 1 after a six year battle with sarcoma cancer. She taught primary grades at Vista View School from 1973-1978. She then spent two years as a staff development specialist for the Ocean View School District. When the Huntington Beach area Teachers Center was created, Susan became its first assistant coordinator and eventually its director. She served 17 years there before retiring in 1997 and moving to Lake Arrowhead.
Susan was born in Glendale, CA on August 11, 1942. One of four children born to Dr. and Mrs. Harry (Elizabeth Vierick) Salisbury , she graduated from Hoover High School in Glendale and later attended CSULA where she received her teaching degree. She began her teaching career at Longfellow Elementary School in the Pasadena School District before attending Ohio State University from which she received her Master’s Degree in reading and children’s literature.
Following the death of her beloved husband, Robert Spoeneman, in 2008, she returned to Huntington Beach to be closer to family and friends. She is survived by her siblings, Joyce Wall, Lois Irwin, and Ralph Salisbury; nieces, Melody Price and Catherine Boyer; nephew, Adam Irwin, as well as many extended family members.
