Surf’s up: Boys Hope Girls Hope (BHGH) of Southern California is holding a movie screening of “Chasing Mavericks” at the Lido Theatre, 3459 Via Lido, Newport Beach, to benefit disadvantaged children. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for children. Free food will be offered beginning at 5 p.m. at Woody’s Diner and the screening follows at 6:30 p.m. All proceeds will benefit BHGH. Music of the night: Stop by the sixth annual Flights & Sounds Summer Festival at the Orange County Great Park, Sand Canyon Avenue and Marine Way in Irvine, each Saturday night in August. This week, local folk singer/songwriter Alice Wallace opens at 7 p.m., followed by Southern-style indie rock band the White Buffalo at 8 p.m. On Aug. 24, indie pop musician Stacy Clark opens for “American Idol” finalist Casey Abrams. On Aug. 31, indie reggae act Colin Giles opens for ska supergroup Western Standard Time. The event is free but parking costs $10; carpooling is encouraged.
