Fountain Valley Police Chief Paul Sorrell, who has served with the department for 30 years and headed it since 2003, will retire in November, the city announced this week.

Capt. Dan Llorens, a 23-year veteran with the department, will take over Nov. 17.

Sorrell started as a police cadet in 1981 and served for 18 years as commander of the city’s SWAT Team, according to the city. He also supervised the Law Enforcement Apprehension Program, which sought to remove drug traffickers and other career criminals from the community, and oversaw a comprehensive traffic safety plan.

Llorens, a former Marine, has worked in Fountain Valley as a patrol officer, gang investigator, Special Investigations Unit sergeant and more.
