Greer’s OC: Huntington event to raise funds for cystic fibrosis cure
We want to see an end to cystic fibrosis for all who suffer from this deadly inherited disease, but also for our close friend’s niece and my son’s college roommate.
Join legendary watermen Laird Hamilton and Dave Kalama, as well as more than a dozen musicians, gold medalists and surfing legends at the Pipeline to a Cure gala on Saturday at the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort and Spa.
It’s a fantastic event dedicated to raising awareness and funds to cure cystic fibrosis. Other Cystic Fibrosis Foundation ambassadors in attendance include musicians Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt of Green Day, world champion surfers Lisa Andersen, Tom Curren and Peter “PT” Townend, surf legend Mickey Munoz, skate legend Tony Hawk and gold medal swimmers Rowdy Gaines and Jason Lezak.
Making a donation or attending Pipeline to a Cure will have a direct positive impact on the lives of those suffering from cystic fibrosis. It affects the lungs and digestive system of nearly 30,000 people in the United States, and 700,000 worldwide. Sadly, the average lifespan is just 37 years old. Researchers found that CF sufferers can benefit from surfing as it improves lung function.
The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with a silent auction, hors d’oeuvres and cocktail reception; at 7 p.m. enjoy a gourmet dinner, live music and live auction. Tickets cost $350 each.

At Caspian, go for the savory kabobs, eggplant borani (fried eggplant mixed with sautéed onion, garlic and yogurt), ghormeh sabzi (chopped and sautéed parsley, cilantro, leeks, cooked with kidney beans, herbs and stew beef served with fluffy basmati rice) and adas polo with marinated baked chicken, served with basmati rice and mixed with lentils, raisins, fresh dates and saffron.
For dessert, we recommend bastani, a vanilla-based ice cream with saffron, pistachio and rose water. It’s divine.

Next door to Caspian, you’ll find Super Irvine, one of the smaller Middle Eastern grocery stores in Irvine. Nevertheless, it’s a great place to find reasonably priced produce, fresh herbs, nuts, cheeses, a deli and butcher, hard-to-find Middle Eastern and East Indian ingredients, fresh hot sangak (Persian sourdough flatbread topped with sesame seeds) and staples like shampoos, tea sets, rice cookers and more.
