‘Chair Portraits and Other Subjects’

Countdown to Retirement Workshop

The Countdown to Retirement workshop is offered by the Huntington Beach Adult School from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Tuesdays until June 5. This three-session workshop will cover Social Security planning for boomers, navigating the Medicare maze, creating an income stream in retirement and avoiding the five biggest mistakes retirees make. Benefit Car Show

The Animal Assistance League of Orange County hosts “Show-Down,” a benefit for abused and abandoned cats and dogs, at the Newland Barn, 19822 Beach Blvd., Huntington Beach. The event lasts from 1 to 5 p.m. and includes a chili cook-off, a raffle, a silent auction, beer and wine tastings and chocolate and cheese tastings, plus a performance by singer Phil Shane. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door and include a sample of each chili and 10 tasting tickets; children 12 and younger are $10, which includes a kids meal. Line Dancing Lessons

The Huntington Beach Elks Lodge 1959 will host couples line dancing lessons every fourth Sunday from 2 to 3 p.m. at the lodge, 7711 Talbert Ave., Huntington Beach. Cost is $6 per person. After the lesson, enjoy tacos, margaritas and karaoke from 3 to 7 p.m.

Memorial Day Ceremony

The city of Huntington Beach and several veterans groups host a Memorial Day ceremony at Pier Plaza, Main Street and Pacific Coast Highway. The event starts at 11 a.m. and includes a speech by Col. Gregory D. Lautner, brigade commander of the 6th Recruiting Brigade, as well as a rifle salute and a performance by the Huntington Beach High School Band. Admission is free. The Huntington Beach Elks Lodge 1959 presents the seventh annual R.C. Classic Antique Car Show and Chili Cook-Off. The car show and breakfast begin at 8 a.m. Admission is free. The event includes crafts, entertainment, vendors and a silent auction. Proceeds benefit the Elks’ Christmas Basket Program that serves local military and families in need.
