Ring in Year of The Dragon
Ring in the Chinese New Year, the Year of the Dragon, at Starfish in Laguna Beach by enjoying four days of special foods and drink offerings to bring good fortune. Starting Monday through Thursday, Chef Yuan will be preparing Pan-Asian foods from the restaurant’s a la carte Dragon Menu.
The offerings include stone crab dumplings with shiitake mushrooms; spring rolls filled with wild shrimp, ground pork, ginger and cellophane noodles; lion’s meatball with Kobe beef, scallions, and Napa cabbage in a consomme; black bean noodles with crispy ground pork; and eight treasures sticky rice with exotic fruits, red beans, and coconut pomelo creme Anglaise.
On Thursday, for the Chinese New Year finale, guest mixologist Dan Oliver will create exotic cocktails to pair with a sampling of the entire Dragon Menu for $40 per person.

Popping up this weekend
Free popcorn will be popping for all shoppers at the Orange County Market Place, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, in honor of its fifth annual National Popcorn Day Celebration Weekend.
Kaptain Kernel will be performing from 10 a.m. to noon with his popcorn hi-jinks, turning kernels into popcorn from his magic bag, followed by a nine-foot stilt walking popcorn bag, from noon to 2 p.m.
At the Orange County Market Place, nearly 1,000 vendors offer a great mix of merchandise and services at terrific values. Choose from produce, gourmet foods to go, arts and crafts, hair salons, food concessions and much more. All events are free with admission, which is $2 for ages 13 years and older. On the wedding planner’s list
After coordinating many weddings where wind caused the bride’s veils to blow and wreak havoc during the ceremony and photos, San Clemente-based wedding planner Jill Watson of the Pampered Bride decided that she needed a solution to keep veils under control.
So she designed magnetic jewelry pieces, aptly named Save the Veil, that can easily be attached to a bride’s veil and serve as a weight.
The veil weights are made of genuine mother of pearl and Swarovski crystals with two small hidden magnets. They’re ideal for brides getting married outside where wind can be an issue.
Save the Veil pieces can be a problem solver for wedding planners, and not a bad idea for wedding photographers and videographers to have on hand.
After the wedding, Save the Veil can be repurposed as magnets to hang wedding photos. The cost for a package of six veil weights is $65; three to six weighs can control most veils.

Library Live series in Newport
The Newport Beach Public Library continues its outstanding authors program, giving locals a chance to meet and hear speakers share their extraordinary stories and work.
Next up in the program, meet National Geographic photographer Peter McBride, author of “The Colorado River: Flowing through Conflict,” at 7 p.m. Jan. 26.
He will be sharing his incredible documentary work on the Colorado River with a stunning slideshow and a lecture.
Seating is limited to 200, and the suggested donation is $10. Parking is available at the Central Library branch, 1000 Avocado Ave., Newport Beach.
Other highlights from the upcoming Library Live series include “The New Hollywood” with speaker Robert D. Kline at 7 p.m. Feb. 22.
The evening is perfect for Oscar film buffs who can meet producer, director and former studio executive Kline, as he gives behind the scenes stories of Hollywood, while showing clips from this year’s Academy Award nominees.
The evening includes a wine reception. Tickets cost $20 for general admission, and $15 for members of the Newport Beach Public Library Foundation.
And at 7 p.m. March 2, don’t miss acclaimed tech journalist and Google expert Steven Levy at “Glimpse into the Googleplex.”
Levy is the author of “IN THE PLEX: How Google Thinks, Works, and Shapes Our Lives,” and he’ll reveal the company’s story from its incredible influence and ambition, to some of its faux pas.
