While having an eco-friendly wedding isn't at the top of most brides' list, there are a few simple ways to cut down on clutter and make your wedding green without spending much money.
"A lot of things you do to save money can also be green," said Christine Varney, a 29-year-old wedding planner who lives in Baltimore and specializes in eco-friendly events.
Here are three of Varney's tips for going green on your big day.
Hold your event locally. The less people have to travel, the better. Newer hotels are often eco-friendly; other options include the Irvine Nature Center in Owings Mills and the Port Annapolis Marina.
Old is new again. At a recent wedding, the bride reused linens from her sister's wedding, and made much of the decor herself. The flowers, from Local Color Flowers, were locally grown and displayed in Mason jars instead of vases. The Ruffled Blog has many other DIY ideas.
Go paperless. Send out invitations and have everyone RSVP online, through your wedding website or Facebook. Instead of having your own separate ceremony programs, menus and place-cards, write all the info on a chalkboard.
