Junior Tiki Toplak scored three goals as the Huntington Beach High boys’ water polo team got past intercity opponent Marina, 13-5, in a nonleague game Friday at the Oilers’ home pool.

Senior Scott Katreeb scored twice and sophomore Noah Harrison also scored twice for the Oilers, who are now 14-5 this year.

“We are having a solid season with a young group of guys,” Oilers Coach Brian Anderson said. “We are looking to build for the future and have a lot of work to do in order to compete with the other stronger teams in Division I competition.”

Marina Coach Jeff Nesmith said his team, which fell to 2-10, is also improving.

“They’re a strong team with a really good goalie,” Nesmith said. “It was a tough game for us.”

FIELD HOCKEY

Ashlyn Pooler and Taryn Rescigno each scored as Huntington Beach topped Fountain Valley, 2-1, in an Oct. 22 league game.

Meagen Good and Pooler had assists.

The H.B. defense, led by Lindsay Sebastian, Brooke Berns and Stephanie Walter and goalie Maelen Lockhart, worked hard to thwart a last-ditch attempt to tie the game by the Barons.

CROSS-COUNTRY

Edison High senior Matt McElroy finished second Saturday at the prestigious Mt. SAC Cross-Country Invitational.

McElroy, competing in the boys’ individual sweepstakes race, fell in the final mile but recovered to finish in 14 minutes, 37 seconds.
